GRI & G3 Guidelines

The G3 Guidelines are embargoed until launched on October 5, 2006 at the international conference, Reporting: a Measure of Sustainability.

The draft G3 are the outcome of three years of intensive collaboration, research and development with stakeholders drawn from all corners of the globe - representing business, civil society, labor, investors, accountants, and others - who all convened to create an improved framework for disclosing sustainability information.

The multi-stakeholder engagement process to create the G3 included:

  • 2003-2004. Structured Feedback Process engaging 450 people worldwide on how to improve the 2002 Guidelines
  • 2005: Multi-Stakeholder Working Groups who created the G3 content
  • January – March, 2006: Over 3000 people attended a series of Sneak Peek (HV: pls keep link to this same location) events in 27 locations across the globe, introducing the world to G3
  • January – March, 2006: Many hundreds of comments were yielded through the draft G3’s 90-day comment period.
  • April – July, 2006: GRI governance bodies approve the updated G3
  • August – September, 2006: Publication of G3
  • ... Leading to October 4-6 2006, the world class event on sustainability and transparency, featuring the release of the G3 Guidelines on October 5.

Organizations are welcome begin reporting on the draft G3, but should note there are some changes in the final version (released October 2006). After their release, the G3 will replace the 2002 Guidelines. All organizations commencing reporting after October 2006 should begin with the G3, however, the GRI will continue to recognize reports based on the 2002 Guidelines for a full two reporting cycles.
